Human Rights Watch is reporting that cluster bombs allegedly used by the Saudi-led coalition against Houthi forces in Yemen are U.S.-made CBU-105 Sensor Fuzed Weapons. 116 countries have banned the use of cluster munitions for the danger they pose to civilians. However, Saudi Arabia, Yemen, and the United States are not signatories to the Convention on Cluster Munitions.

The widely banned CBU-105 Sensor fuzed weapons contain 10 BLU-108 submunitions. The submunitions are released from the sky by small parachutes over an area as wide as an American football field.

Each submunition contains four sensors called Skeets that sense, classify, and engage a target such as an armored vehicle.

If the submunition does not detect its target, they are designed to self-destruct in the air or deactivate themselves. However, when this mechanism doesn't work, the bombs pose a lethal danger for those who encounter them later.

According to Human Rights Watch arms director Steven Goose, "Saudi-led cluster munition air strikes have been hitting areas near villages, putting local people in danger."
