Muhammad cartoon contest: shootout at Texas Curtis Culwell Center, two men shot and killed

Two men were killed during a shooting that took place outside the venue of a contest for cartoon depictions of the Prophet Muhammad in Garland, Texas Sunday evening.

Reports said an officer dressed in SWAT gear took the stage toward the end of the event at the Curtis Culwell Center and told those in attendance that a shooting had occurred, and that one officer and two suspects were shot.

It wasn't immediately clear if the shooting was related to the event.

The New York-based American Freedom Defense Initiative, led by conservative anti-sharia activist Pamela Geller, was hosting a contest with a prize of US$10,000 for the best cartoon depicting Muhammad.

The Washington Times reported that two men drove up to the center and opened fire before police on the scene returned fire, killing both assailants. Unconfirmed reports say both men were armed with AK-47s while at least one also had a grenade.

Drawings of the Prophet Muhammad are considered offensive to many followers of Islam. According to Islamic tradition, any physical depiction of the prophet, even respectful ones, are considered blasphemous.
