Patriot Act France: French pols approve new surveillance measures - TomoNews

A controversial bill passed by the lower house of the French parliament this week approves sweeping surveillance powers to combat the rising threat of terrorism in France.

The French legislature overwhelmingly supported a new intelligence bill on Tuesday that gives authorities the right to spy on the digital or mobile communications of anyone deemed a terror risk.

The new bill, which received majority backing from the Socialist and UMP parties, gives intelligence services the right to place recording devices in private homes and cars. It also allows them to install keylogger devices that record keystrokes on targeted computers. Authorities will also be able to place antennas and other mechanisms that can capture phone conversations and text messages. Internet providers can be forced to give up information upon request, and French authorities will be able to store metadata for up to five years.

Rising security threats in the region have pushed European governments to reevaluate their current intelligence gathering procedures.
