Penguins May Poop To Clear Breeding Areas Of Snow
  • 9 years ago
A time-lapse video was recently released showing Gentoo penguins in the Antarctic pooping in a common area to possibly clear the ground of snow more quickly in order to breed.

Antarctic penguins may have a developed an efficient way of melting snow in order to breed.

Based on a recently released time-lapse video of Gentoo penguins, it is believed that the group poops in a chosen area, and the mass of dark-colored waste absorbs heat, clearing the ground more quickly.

The reason for this behavior is that, in general, the birds need access to the underlying stones in order to build nests for their eggs.
