Recently the United Nations issued a report documenting "alarmingly high levels of violence" against women in many countries globally despite gains in some areas like education, health and even political power. Dr. Macklin takes on this paradox.
In her lecture she will explore the ways in which rights related to women's health are respected and protected in some parts of the world while barely being recognized in other places. Although advocates for women's rights have traditionally focused on women's reproductive rights, their agenda has broadened to include gender-based violence and traditional customs that threaten women's health and safety. The United States presents a mixed picture, with considerable variations at the state and local levels.
