California gas line explosion closes major highway, injures up to 15

An explosion occurred at a shooting range in Fresno, California on Friday after a construction crew accidentally ruptured a natural gas pipeline.

The explosion took place at the Fresno County Peace Officers’ Range. A backhoe operator was reinforcing a berm behind the targets at the shooting range while a jail inmate crew was digging bullets out of the berm when the accident occurred, SFGate reported.

The backhoe accidentally struck a 12-inch natural gas pipeline when it was scraping the ground. The pipeline exploded and up to 15 people were injured in the blast, according to Reuters.

“The driver of the tractor, amazingly, was able to walk over to the ambulance,” spokesman Tony Botti of the Fresno County Sheriff’s Office told SFGate.

Four victims were in critical condition and were taken to Community Regional Medical Center in Fresno, Reuters reported.
