Belle Gibson, author of The Whole Pantry, admits she faked brain cancer, now faces backlash
  • 9 years ago
Belle Gibson, the 23-year-old Australian author of The Whole Pantry, is now facing the consequences of lying about having brain cancer. Her "Whole Pantry app" featured thousands of healthy recipes that Gibson claimed to have helped her win her battle with cancer. The app had more than 200,000 downloads and thousands of followers.

But now, her fame has turned to notoriety. The media and her own followers had doubts over her claims when inconsistencies in her story became increasingly apparent. After admitting to Australian Women's Weekly that her whole cancer was all a lie, her publisher withdrawn her book from production. Currently, most of her social media sites are no longer active.

Gibson is now facing worldwide fury despite the good intentions of her health app. Many accuse her having social media-Munchausen syndrome and negatively impacting the image of alternative healing. Others condemn her for putting the lives of real cancer sufferers in jeopardy with her made up remedies.
