Iraq: UN team visits camp for families who have fled Ramadi fighting

A senior UN delegation has visited camps in Baghdad for Iraq’s internally-displaced people – 2.7 million of whom have fled their homes since January last year.
Lise Grande, Deputy Special Representative of the United Nations Assistance Mission for Iraq, toured a camp for families from Ramadi.
In the past two weeks alone, an estimated 114,000 people have poured out of the western city, as ISIL militants moved in.
Humanitarian agencies are doing their best to accommodate those caught up in the vast exodus.
It comes as Iraqi security forces pursue efforts to rout ISIL from Ramadi.
They have regained some ground amid fierce fighting that often boils down to tough guerrilla warfare.
Iraqi troops and Shi’ite militias expelled the insurgents from the city of Tikrit this month but their attack on Ramadi illustrates the extremists’ resilience.
