Bloody attack on pro-democracy protesters in Hong Kong

The ongoing pro-democracy protests in Hong Kong appeared to be winding down on Friday as rain and the end of the public holiday conspired to take the wind out of the protesters’ sails.

Until a mob of thugs in Hong Kong’s Mong Kok district surrounded pro-democracy protesters and started assaulting them. The attackers destroyed the protesters’ encampments and tore down pro-democracy signs.

Organizers have implored pro-democracy protesters to resist incitement by the attackers, and accuse the police of failing to protect protesters against violence. Organizers threatened to call off planned talks with the government unless the attacks cease immediately.

Employing local gangs to intimidate journalists and activists is a known tactic of pro-Beijing forces in Hong Kong.
