Caught on tape: Police brutally beat handcuffed Hong Kong protest leader

Police in Hong Kong have been filmed dragging a handcuffed protester into a dark corner to subject him to a prolonged beating.

The shocking video, which has gone viral in Hong Kong and beyond, comes as police continue their push to clear out remaining pro-democracy protesters who have occupied several city’s districts in the hope of forcing the central government to permit residents to freely elect grassroots candidates to the city’s top political office in 2017.

Protest leader Tsang kin-chiu (曾健超), a member of the pro-democracy Civic Party, is understood to be the man seen being assaulted in the video. According to Tsang’s attorney, he sustained multiple injuries and bruises in the four-minute attack.

The assault was captured on video by reporters from Hong Kong’s Apple Daily newspaper, one of TomoNews’ sister publications.
