Whoops! Vigilantes nearly beat up police chief because he ‘looked like a bad guy’

In a village in southwestern Taiwan, the police captain was mistaken for a bad guy and nearly beaten by overzealous village vigilantes.
A few days before the incident, the local temple had been robbed. The money, 14,000 Taiwan dollars in cash--approximately 450 US dollars--was kept in a safe inside the temple, unable to break open the safe the thieves had simply rolled the entire safe outside, loaded it into the back of a truck, and driven off with the entire payload!
When the police chief was checking the security footage from the robbery he recognized one of the robbers, a local 40 year old male.
The police chief and his colleagues went to pick up the man and brought him back to the temple so that the thief could walk the police through how he and the other men had committed the crime.
News gets around fast in a small village and when other locals heard that police were taking the criminal back to the temple they decided to go dole out their own personal justice.
When they arrived at the temple, possibly drunk, they spotted the criminal with his police escort. Unfortunately, they mistook the police chief as the thief, because--as they later explained--he just looked like a bad guy!
The police chief was able to fend off the drunken would-be-heroes and did not come to any harm himself. The locals have apologized and attempted to offer a token gift as part of the apology.
The police chief graciously rejected the gift and said that he was only doing his job. No one got injured anyway, although the police chief has said that next time he will definitely wear his official uniform vest so as not to be mistaken as the bad guy again.
