India bank robbery: inspired by Dhoom 2, thieves dig huge tunnel to bank vault

Three men were arrested in the Indian city of Haryana under suspicion of robbing a bank by digging a tunnel that gave them access to the vault.

Police quoted by the BBC said the three men are local residents. One is a medical laboratory worker, one is a property dealer and the third is a farmer.

A fourth man, the owner of the house where the tunnel was started and the alleged mastermind of the robbery, was later found dead in his car.

Police said the man took his life by ingesting poison and that he might have killed himself over fears of being arrested.

The robbers used iron rods and spades and worked for 40 days to dig the 40-meter-long tunnel, BBC said.

Once the tunnel was finished, they accessed the bank’s vault and emptied 77 vault lockers.

According to India Today, the lockers inside the vault were over 60 to 70 years old and there were no CCTV cameras inside the room.

Police recovered 24 kilograms of gold and silver jewellery and 60,000 Indian rupees, or about US$1,000, from the three suspects.

According to the BBC, the robbers appeared to have gotten the idea of the tunnel from Bollywood film Dhoom.
