California plane crash: pilot killed after crashing Hawker Hunter in strawberry field
  • 9 years ago
An ageing former military aircraft owned by a civilian contractor crashed as it approached a military base in Southern California on Wednesday.

The Hawker Hunter MK-58 with a seasoned pilot on board was about to land at the Point Mugu Naval Air Station at around 5:15 p.m. when it crashed into a strawberry field, according to CBS Los Angeles. A witness quoted by CBS Los Angeles said that after the crash a plume of smoke was visible for miles away.

The Los Angeles Times quoted Kimberly Gearhart, a spokeswoman for Naval Base Ventura County, as saying that the plane was owned by Airborne Tactical Advantage, a military contractor that simulates threats during training missions.

The pilot was a civilian who worked for the contractor. He was declared dead at the scene. His identity is being withheld, pending notification of the family, the Los Angeles Times reported.

No one else was injured in the accident.
