Marine Biological Association set off boat drones from Plymouth to conduct 2-week fish-tracking stud

British scientists deployed three robot boats from Plymouth Harbor this Thursday on a two-week fish-tracking mission in and around Marine Protected Areas (MPAs).

Scientists from Britain’s Marine Biological Association have released plaice, sole, brill fish tagged with “pingers” in the surrounding waters. The scientists will study the fishes’ interaction with the environment based on pings picked up by the robot boats and listening stations placed on the seabed.

“This technology will give us a new dimension in our understanding of fish movements, residency and migrations in and around the marine protected areas off Plymouth. Understanding how fish use MPAs will be vital in understanding the value of these management tools to conserve fish stocks. One of the aims of the EU Marine Strategy Framework Directive is achieving sustainable fisheries, through an ecologically coherent network of MPAs,” project lead Stephen Cotterell of the Marine Biological Association said in a press release.

The unmanned boats, the AutoNaut, C-Enduro, and SV3 Waveglider, will run on solar and wave power and will also collect data on the ocean water temperature and salinity.

The success of this mission could bring about a new trend in marine exploration, using autonomous boats that can run for months on wind, solar, and wave power.
