Sierra Leone Ebola patient to be airlifted to Nebraska Medical Center for treatment

An Ebola patient in Sierra Leone may be airlifted to Nebraska on Saturday for treatment. The Sierra Leone surgeon, identified as Dr. Martin Salia, is also a permanent resident of the United States.

The Nebraska Medical Center has dispatched an air ambulance crew to Sierra Leone where they will evaluate whether the patient is stable enough for transport. If cleared for travel, Dr. Salia will likely arrive in Omaha on Saturday afternoon.

The Nebraska Medical Center houses one of the four biocontainment units in the U.S. deemed highly prepared to handle Ebola cases. Out of the 18 Ebola containment beds in the country, there are 10 at the Nebraska Medical Centre, three in Emory University Hospital in Atlanta, three at St. Patrick Hospital in Missoula, Montana, and two at the National Institutes of Health in Maryland.

To date, at least five doctors in Sierra Leone have died treating Ebola patients.
