Italian police have released secretly filmed video of an initiation into the southern Italian mafia known as the 'Ndrangheta. The grainy video, shot at a farmhouse north of Milan, shows for the first time a swearing-in ceremony in which the inductee(s) is told to poison themselves with cyanide or shoot themselves, if they are ever caught.

The investigation targeted mafia cells in the country’s north and reveals the lengths gang members will go to keep their secret, as well as code words to use in certain situations.

Phone taps along with the video and others like it helped the national police make 40 arrests, mostly in the north, but also some on the southern island of Sicily.
