Hong Kong protests: Student leaders paralyze government headquarters as clashes escalate

Sixty-five days after protesters took to the streets in Hong Kong to demand that the public be allowed to determine who may stand as a candidate in elections for the city’s chief executive, violence escalated on Sunday night as demonstrators broke through cordons near central government buildings on Hong Kong Island.

Late Sunday night, two student groups attempted to increase pressure on Hong Kong authorities, who have been clearing protest sites throughout the city, by urging demonstrators to besiege government headquarters in Admiralty at 9 p.m. Demonstrators stormed past police lines from two directions to occupy Lung Wo Road, a major road connecting the east and west of Hong Kong Island.

In the first line were students with helmets, goggles, masks, umbrellas and hand-made shields to protect themselves from police pepper spray, batons and water hoses. During the chaotic clashes, men were seen being led away by police with bloodied heads. More than 40 people were arrested at scene.

The protesters successfully occupied the four-lane Lung Wo Road, and student groups claimed to have surrounded the government headquarters at around 11 p.m. The confrontation continued into Monday, and central government offices were closed for half a day.
