Sniper bullet changes direction: US developing EXACTO bullet that changes direction midflight

The Department of Defense has been testing a .50 caliber bullet that can change direction mid flight.

The Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) is testing a new type of sniper bullet under the EXACTO, or Extreme Accuracy Tasked Ordnance program. It was developed by Teledyne Scientific & Imaging LLC in California.

"The Exacto 50-caliber round and optical sighting technology expects to greatly extend the day and nighttime range over current state-of-the-art sniper systems. The system combines a maneuverable bullet and a real-time guidance system to track and deliver the projectile to the target, allowing the bullet to change path during flight to compensate for any unexpected factors that may drive it off course," DARPA officials reported.

The bullet has the ability to changing direction mid-air, but the mechanisms that allow the ammunition this capability have not been publicly disclosed.

DARPA announced two rounds of successful tests for the EXACTO bullet. One in February and another in April. In both cases, the bullet was purposely fired off-target yet was still able to hit the target.

DARPA hopes that the bullet will be helpful in windy and dusty terrain in areas like Afghanistan.

The next phase in development will include live fire tests and improvements to the ammunition.
