A St. Louis County police officer fatally shot a man who pointed a gun at him in Berkeley, Missouri, just two miles from the city of Ferguson, the location of the August police shooting of unarmed black teenager Michael Brown, which sparked protests around the country.

St. Louis County Police Chief Jon Belmar told reporters at a press conference at 7 a.m. local time today that the police officer responded to a call for a larceny last night at the 6800 block of Hanley Road.

The officer, who has not been identified, encountered two people on the side of the store. The officer exited his vehicle and approached the two men.

One man pulled out a handgun and pointed it at the officer, who then fired three shots at the man. The man was fatally wounded, while his companion fled the scene.

A crowd of about 100 people arrived at the gas station shortly after the shooting, as did a contingent of police officers from around St. Louis County and the Missouri State Highway Patrol, some of them in riot gear.

The officer was described as a white, 34-year-old, six-year veteran. The victim was described as an 18-year-old black male. A woman who described herself as the victim’s mother said the victim was her son, Antonio Martin.
