The funeral for 19-year-old shooting victim Jonte Lee Reed at Ebenezer Baptist Church in Los Angeles was delayed for 30 minutes on Saturday because somebody jumped in the hearse and departed with the departed.

Before 11 a.m. Saturday, the pastor’s wife, Shirley Little arrived with the hearse containing Jonte’s body. But when Pastor Kenneth Little went outside to retrieve the casket, something was missing.

As it turned out, a mentally ill man jumped into the hearse while it idled on the side of the road and drove off. Relatives at the church made frantic phone calls, and several relatives heading to the funeral passed the hearse heading in the opposite direction.

They managed to force the man to pull the hearse to the side of the road and started arguing with him. Police arrested the car thief, and the family finally took Jonte’s body back to the church.

The man who stole the hearse will undergo a mental evaluation, and will likely be charged with auto theft.
