Missing AirAsia flight QZ8501: Last communications of doomed plane revealed

Indonesian President Joko Widodo on Monday vowed to do ‘all it takes’ to find the AirAsia flight which was carrying 162 people when it disappeared over the Java Sea on Sunday.

Indonesia has now sought the help of the United States in the search for the missing plane.

AirAsia Flight QZ8501 took off from Juanda International Airport in the Indonesian city of Surabaya at 5:20 a.m.

More than 50 minutes into the flight, the pilot asked air traffic control for permission to turn left to evade a storm. The aircraft turned left seven miles after his permission was granted.

Moments later, the pilot asked to be able climb to 38,000 feet to avoid the thunderstorm. But air traffic control only allowed the aircraft to climb to 34,000 feet because there were too many planes in the area.

At 6:18 a.m, three minutes after communications stopped, the jetliner disappeared from radar.
