German newspaper arson attack: Hamburger Morgenpost targeted after reprinting Charlie Hebdo cartoons

Two men were arrested on Sunday by German authorities for an arson attack at the headquarters of a newspaper that reprinted cartoons by the satirical French magazine Charlie Hebdo.

The offices of Hamburger Morgenpost, a newspaper based in the German city of Hamburg, were targeted in an arson attack.

Two unidentified men, aged 35 and 39, were seen acting suspiciously in the courtyard of the newspaper’s offices at around 1 a.m. on Sunday.

They threw rocks and incendiary devices at the archive room of the offices, causing a fire. The flames were quickly extinguished and no one was injured.

Security has been beefed up at the offices of other prominent newspapers in Berlin following the attack.

Meanwhile, another 24-year-old man, who was suspected of fighting alongside the Islamic State in Syria from October 2013 to November 2014, was also arrested. His home in North Rhine-Westphalia was raided by police.

However, authorities said there was no evidence suggesting that the man was planning to stage attacks or had any relations with the shootings in Paris.

Tapping the conversations of Islamic State leaders, U.S. intelligence said the Paris attacks might be the prelude to other attacks in Europe.
