A surveillance video at a gas station in Tauranga, a small town in New Zealand, shows a man calmly walking into the shop and asking for help while a metal rod sticking out of his head.

Police said the victim, 23-year-old Adam Armitage, was attacked by two men and a woman while sitting in his car on Katikati Road. He took several punches before being struck with a metal rod.

Armitage then drove to a gas station, the only shop in town open at that hour, and asked for help.

The owner of the gas station, Lester Gray, told the New Zealand Herald he thought “It was like a Halloween prank,” and that Armitage “was amazingly relaxed,” while he asked the cashier to phone the police.

Armitage was sent to a local hospital just after midnight, where he had the iron bar removed before he was airlifted to Waikato Hospital. He is currently in a serious but stable condition.

Tauranga police are searching for the suspect, one of whom was described as a 20-year-old Maori man with spiky hair and a skinny build.
