Body camera police video shows Albuquerque police officer shot by suspect in routine traffic stop

Lou Golson, a 31-year veteran for the APD was shot 4 times during what he thought was a routine stop. Golson suspected the driver of drunk driving.

As he approached the vehicle, Christopher Cook took the safety off his 9mm. Cook fired five rounds at the officer. One bullet missed. Three bullets were stopped by the officer’s bullet proof vest. Another bullet struck and broke Golson’s left femur.

The officer broke his wrist when he hit the ground. He then returned eight bullets toward the suspect.

Cook avoided the officers gunshots. Traces of his DNA would later be found on the weapon he left behind in the SUV. Lucky for Cook, Golson was unable to reload due to the broken wrist. The suspect fled the scene before backup arrived.

Cook had stolen the SUV from That Car Place the day before, police say.

Two nights after the shooting, another officer spotted the trigger happy car thief walking just three-and-a-half miles from the scene of the shooting.

The cop identified him as the most wanted man in town and arrested him on a charge of first-degree attempted murder.

Golson is recovering at home and hopes the body cam video will help the public understand the risk of a police officer’s job.

“They see in real time how violent our job can turn, and how quickly it can turn.” he told ABC.
