Massive blizzard hits the United States’ East Coast on Monday

The Mid-Atlantic and the Northeast are bracing for what the National Weather Service has labeled a “crippling” snowstorm threatening to sweep through the East Coast on Monday and Tuesday. New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio warned city residents on Sunday that New York is facing what could be “one of the largest snowstorms in the history of this city.”

The snowstorm, dubbed “Winter Storm Juno” by the National Weather Service, began in the Midwest. Storms are created at cold fronts as warm air from the equator meets cold air from the poles. At the point where the two types of air meet, the warm, moist air rises above the cold air and creates storm clouds.

This relatively mild storm will likely transform from a clipper-type storm system into a blizzard as it makes its way from the Midwest to the Northeast. The main reason for this transformation is that as the storm approaches Washington D.C., the storm hits a trough, a concave, low-pressure area of the global jet stream conducive to wet, stormy weather. Jet streams are formed by the difference in temperature between the northern and southern hemispheres. As this difference in temperature begins to lessen because of global warming, the jet stream has started to move more slowly, and consequentially become more wavy. This has created more opportunities for the troughs to dip deeper into parts of the United States.
