This month, a 20-something-year-old American woman flew in from Vietnam, but then missed her connecting flight to America.

She wasn’t too keen on going home anyway, but didn’t have enough money to transfer to any other country, so she decided to take up residence in the Taoyuan Airport.

Wandering back and forth between the two terminals, she slept on the waiting seats when she was tired, ate the free food samples from various shops, and spent hours surfing the Internet on the free computers in the airport.

It took authorities 12 days before they realized she had become a temporary residence of the airport. Airport security finally picked her up and contacted the American Institute in Taipei, the US’s de facto embassy here.

AIT finally footed the bill for her ticket back to the States, but even then she needed a full escort to make sure she didn’t slip off. That didn’t stop her from trying every trick in the book and arguing with security and AIT officials to try and avoid going back to the United States.
