Copenhagen shootings leave 2 dead and 5 wounded

Danish police shot dead a man in Copenhagen on Sunday during an manhunt after earlier shootings in which two people were killed and five were wounded.

By 0500 GMT, police said they had fired shots and killed a man in Norrebro, an area in Copenhagen not far from the areas of the two attacks.

Police did not confirm any link between the man they shot and the earlier attacks.

The first shooting occurred at a Copenhagen cafe that was holding a debate on freedom of speech and blasphemy, killing one person and wounding three police.

The debate on Saturday was attended by Swedish artist Lars Vilks, who has been receiving death threats for his cartoon depictions of the Prophet Muhammad.

A gunman wearing a purple mask and thick puffer jacket opened fire on the cafe. Witnesses and media reports say that between 20 to 40 shots were fired from an automatic weapon.

The gunman then fled the scene in a black Volkswagen Polo that was later found a short distance from the scene.

The French ambassador, who was also in attendance, compared the attack to the Charlie Hebdo attacks in Paris in January.

Around 10 hours after the first shooting, shots were fired near a Copenhagen synagogue when a person approached two police officers and started shooting.

One civilian was shot in multiple times in the head and later died, while two police officers were wounded by gunfire. They received injuries that were not life-threatening.

The shooter was dressed in a light gray jacket, black pants and black shoes. Police said he fled the scene on foot.

It is not clear if the shootings are connected.
