California train crash: 28 injured when Metrolink train hits truck on railroad crossing

A Los Angeles-bound commuter train derailed early Tuesday morning after it rammed into a tractor trailer that had stopped on the tracks in Oxnard, California, injuring nearly 30 people, including four critically.

The fiery collision occurred at around 5:45 a.m. in Ventura County, about 70 miles northwest of Los Angeles.

The Metrolink commuter train was traveling at around 79 miles per hour when a conductor spotted a truck up ahead on the tracks, Sergio Martinez of the Oxnard Fire Department told the Los Angeles Times.

The engineer initiated emergency protocols but was unable to prevent the crash. Three cars derailed and toppled over. A fourth also derailed but remained upright, along with the engine.

The driver of the truck tried to flee the scene but was apprehended by police, Ventura County Fire spokeswoman Margaret Remmen told Reuters.
A total of 51 people were involved in the accident, including passengers, conductors and the driver of the truck.

There were no fatalities but 28 people were taken to six hospitals, some suffering significant head, neck and back traumas or broken bones, Steve Carroll, Emergency Medical Services administrator, told reporters.

The crash comes three weeks after a Metro-North commuter train in New York struck a car at a railroad crossing and derailed, killing six people.
