World’s deadliest spiders found in banana: Mom finds Brazilian wandering spiders in Tesco fruit
  • 9 years ago
A Bristol, UK woman found an unwanted -- and potentially deadly -- companion in the bag of bananas her husband bought from Tesco, SWNS reports.

Maria Layton, 43, reportedly found a nest of Brazilian wandering spiders as she was about to hand a banana to her 6-year-old daughter.

“I was so scared,” Layton said in an interview. “I don’t like spiders at the best of times, but have read about the Brazilian wandering spiders - and was very frightened about the potential threat.”

The Brazilian wandering spider has the most toxic venom in the world, according to the 2010 Guinness World Records. Its bite can cause painful hours-long erections, pain, inflammation, paralysis and even death.

Layton said she put the store-bought bananas in the freezer because she had read that kills them.

When she reported her finding to Tesco, the company told her to return the bananas to the store for a refund.

“Tesco were a bit useless,” Layton said. “I was really concerned about the possibility of this dangerous spider and spider eggs in my house and really wanted some helpful advice on how to act.”

The spiders likely infested the bananas in Costa Rica, where Tesco buys its bananas.
