Russia to deliver long-awaited missile system to Iran

Russia’s President Putin has signed a decree lifting the ban on the sale of a missile system to Iran.

The move is part of a wider oil-for-goods swap ahead of the eventual lifting of sanctions against Iran after world powers reached an interim agreement on its nuclear weapons program.

Moscow is hoping to benefit economically if a final deal is reached after the provisional accord was brokered in Switzerland between Iran and six world powers including Russia.

The decree paves the way for the delivery of the S-300 anti-missile system to Iran that had been cancelled in 2010 under pressure from the West.

A senior Russian government official is reported as saying that Russia has already started supplying grain, equipment and construction materials to Iran in exchange for crude oil under a barter deal.
