Police in Illinois are hunting for a convicted murderer who escaped from prison Wednesday after he overpowered a correctional officer and took his keys and uniform.

The inmate, identified as Kamron T. Taylor, 23, escaped from the Jerome Combs Detention Center in Kankakee, about 60 miles south of Chicago, at about 3 a.m. Taylor stole the correctional officer's Brown 2012 Chevrolet Equinox with Illinois license plate P506660, the Kankakee County Sheriff's Office said in a statement.

Taylor is considered armed and dangerous and is described as a black male standing 5 feet, 9 inches tall and weighing 170 pounds, according to the sheriff.

Taylor, who has a history of escape attempts, was convicted for the 2013 murder of 21-year-old Nelson Williams Jr. during an attempted robbery at Williams’ home in Kankakee. He faces a sentence of 45 years to life.

The Kankakee County Sheriff’s Office is offering a $5,000 reward for information that leads to the capture of the escaped inmate.
