SINGAPORE: WEB USERS PAY TRIBUTE TO LEE KUAN YEW
Web users in Singapore have been paying tribute to their former and first Prime Minister Lee Kuan Yew who died in the early hours of Monday morning, at the age of 91. A steady stream of people have been visiting the hospital where he had been battling severe pneumonia for the past month to leave messages for the city-state`s founding father and mourn his passing.
His son Lee Hsien Loong, who is the current Prime Minister of Singapore, had posted a series of statements to Facebook over the past few days updating web users on his father`s state of health and his turn for the worse on Sunday.
And as the people of Singapore awaited news with baited breath it was certainly one way of putting a stop to any rumours. A false statement had begun circulating online the week before saying Lee Kuan Yew had already died, generating a lot of confusion on social media.
Singaporeans have been preparing themselves for this moment for some weeks now. Affectionately named by some as the Lion of Singapore, he was criticized by others for his authoritarian tactics. But many have hailed his 31 years leading the country, for putting an end to British rule and leading the country to independence in 1965, for taking Singapore from colonial outpost to “Asian Tiger”.
One of the most popular and widely shared tributes on social media platforms is this drawing by Ong Yi Teck. The 20 year old artist wrote Lee Kuan Yew`s name over 18 000 times to create a portrait and to show appreciation for what the former Prime Minister did for Singapore....
