Researchers working in Central Australia believe they’ve turned up evidence of the largest meteorite impact to have ever occurred on Earth.

Rough estimates put the time of the collision back about 300 million years.

The discovery was an accidental one made in the process of geothermal research while examining a core that was extracted from deep within the Earth’s crust.

In it were traces of rock that had been transformed into glass, an indicator that a large impact had caused a great deal of heat and pressure.
