The BBC is planning to air a new adaptation of Tolstoy’s War and Peace next year. VoR’s Alice Lagnado asks whether these screen versions of great Russian novels do the books justice and whether there is any point trying to stay faithful to the originals anyway.

Claire Knight, who is Lecturer in Modern European History at King's College and completing a PhD in Soviet cinema at Cambridge, says views on the authenticity of adaptations depend on how authenticity is defined.
