Meet NY Yankees TV cameraman Duilio Costabile. Thru home movies taken nearly 10 years ago, we get a rare behind the scenes look at the legendary "old man".
Thank you for bringing tears to my eyes. I was 22 years old, it was 1980 & my dream of becoming a major league baseball player was very much alive (playing for West Virginia Wesleyan College in my senior year and being scouted by major league scouts)..and I was a production intern at WPIX-TV and met Duilio for the first time...he knew I played and loved baseball, so he took me under his wing, and brought me to several Yankee & Met games - He would tell me to sit quietly and get hot dogs and coffee for the announcers whenever they wanted them.. and allowed me the honor of meeting Phil Rizzuto, Bill White & Frank Messer..He used to take me to the clubhouse where I actually had a beer with Yogi Berra and Fran Healy...I will never forget Duilio...He brought me so close to the pinnacle/cathedral of the game I love so dearly. I was in awe of Duilio. He knew everyone and everyone knew Duilio. THANK YOU FOR LETTING ME SEE MY FRIEND ONCE MORE...THANK YOU...I didn't know he had passed.
Rob, I am a niece of Duilio. The video was sent to me by my brother. We did not have much contact with him but this was very interesting to see. thanks.
Thank you for posting this beautiful tribute - Duilio was as much a NY baseball institution as any player stadium or uniform. A true original and one of the best ball busters in sports history. I can still hear him say "Chroder (Brewers color analyst Bill Schroeder) you eat like a pig and you chit like a gooz". I miss him every time I'm at Yankee or Shea.
Wow - I worked on WPIX's (11 Alive!) Yankee telecasts in the early '80s and this film about Duilio made the memories come flooding back. Rob, thanks for taking the time to make it.
Rob Salamanca:
Wonderful job putting this video together! Funny as hell! Duilio is bigger than life and this video is a treat. You should be proud and thanks for the privilege of seeing the mayor! You made my year.
i can't thank robbo enough for this film as time passes it becomes harder to remember the faces and the laughs we all had together now we can always be with him for at least a few moments again and again.thanks
To anyone outside of the TV business viewing this I say you have entered a world only a few have the good fortune to be in. To be in it with Duilio was beyond description and this video tells it the WAY IT WAS! EVERYDAY was like you see it!
