A pilot who was forced to ditch an aircraft is safe and sound. The single-engine Cirrus SR-22 had been soaring the skies approximately 250 miles away from Maui, Hawaii on Sunday when the plane ran out of fuel.

He alerted the Hawaii National Guard that the aircraft was running low on fuel about 4 hours before the supply was depleted. The Coast Guard sent an MH-65 Dolphin helicopter and an HC-130 aircraft to the scene to monitor and assist the distressed pilot.

He was able to deploy the "airframe parachute system", which caused the plane to rapidly plummet downwards. After some time, it was stabilized and drifted over the surface of the ocean below.
