Familiar Voices Have Healing Powers For Sick Patients

A recent study led by Northwestern Medicine and the Hines VA Hospital in Illinois shows that hearing familiar voices regularly can help brain-injured loved ones recover significantly faster.

Familiar voices may have healing powers for loved ones suffering from traumatic brain injuries, even when they’re in a coma.

In a study led by Northwestern Medicine and Hines VA Hospital in Illinois, researchers have found that coma patients who hear voices they know recover much faster than those resting in silence.

Tests on the experimental group also show that it does matter whose voice they’re hearing, as brain scans lit up with activity when they recognized the voices; unfamiliar ones produced little change.

The study examined fifteen coma patients with an average of 70 days after brain injury.

Eight were given what is called Familiar Auditory Sensory Training, where, for example, family members would record stories which would be played repeatedly.
