A Tongan volcano has, in only a matter of weeks, created a new island.

Located near the country’s capital, the angry mountain began erupting in late December, spewing rocks and significant amounts of ash.

The activity has posed threats to the health of nearby vegetation and the safety of planes flying over the area.

It’s also resulted in the collection of volcanic debris close to one of the two vents.

That material since formed a significant landmass that measures approximately a mile long and 300 feet high.

A volcanologist from New Zealand traveled near the site and made a number of observations.

Overall, he doesn’t think the newly formed feature is long for this world.

He noted that as it’s made primarily of rock the island is unlikely a match for the ocean’s erosive powers.

Once eruptions cease, within a few months the newly formed mass will probably be gone.
