Muslim Cleric Forbids The Making Of Snowmen

A Saudi Arabian religious figure declared a fatwa, or religious ruling, against building snowmen because they are intended to resemble humans, a likeness forbidden by Islam of anything that has a soul.

Snowmen may not have benchmark human qualities like consciousness and a pulse, but according to Muslim cleric Sheikh Mohammad Saleh Al Minjed of Saudi Arabia, making them has more of an impact than many would imagine.

Per Islamic law it’s forbidden to make objects that represent human beings.

Replicas of animals are also a violation.

“God has given people space to make whatever they want which does not have a soul, including trees, ships, fruits, buildings and so on,” the cleric writes in response to a question he was asked about building snowmen.

The fatwa, or religious ruling, stirred up strong opinions from social media users who self-identified their Muslim faith.
