STORY: New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio praised his city's police department on Monday (January 5), amid a deepening rift between the two sides following the ambush last month of two police officers.
De Blasio held a news conference designed to look back at crime statistics in the city during 2014. He said overall major crime was down last year and he praised his city's police force calling it "the world's greatest police department".
"I've traveled all over the world and people speak reverently about NYPD, they want to learn from the NYPD, they want to visit this building, talk to its leaders, learn about its technology, its strategies," de Blasio said.
"And it is the world's greatest police department, because it is constantly committed to getting better," he added.
