NYPD shooting suspect identified

Police have identified a 28 year old male named Ismaaiyl Brinsley as the shooter in the deaths of two New York City Police officers.

Police say Brinsley walked up to the passenger side of a police car in the Bedford-Stuyvesant area of Brooklyn on Saturday and shot and killed two officers on duty.

He then ran into a subway station and shot himself.

New York City Mayor Bill DeBlasio.

(SOUNDBITE) (English) NEW YORK CITY MAYOR BILL DEBLASIO SAYING:

"When a police officer is murdered, it tears at the foundation of our society. It is an attack on all of us, it is an attack on everything we hold dear."

The officers, 40 year old Rafael Ramos and 32 year old Wenjian Liu were both pronounced dead at a nearby hospital.

Police say earlier on Saturday the suspect shot his ex-girlfriend at her home near Baltimore, Maryland. She is expected to survive.
