In an interview with People magazine, President Barack Obama revealed that in the course of his life he’s been mistaken for a valet.

He added, "There's no black male my age, who's a professional, who hasn't come out of a restaurant and is waiting for their car and somebody didn't hand them their car keys."

Being sized up as a waiter is also something he’s experienced.

Michelle Obama, who was part of the interview as well, recalled a black tie affair where her husband was asked to fetch someone a cup of coffee.

Years ago, a reporter for the Wall Street Journal discussed witnessing a time when Barack Obama was on the receiving end of racial prejudice.

She said that she’d been talking to Obama at a 2003 event in New York City.

When she spoke with another guest later and revealed with whom she’d been chatting, there was a measurable degree of surprise.

That person admitted he thought Obama was a member of the wait crew and even asked him to get a drink.

Nonetheless, in the recent People magazine interview, Obama said he feels the race situation is improving overall.
