Former Miss America, Mary Ann Mobley recently passed away. On Tuesday, she died at her Beverly Hills home following a battle with breast cancer.

Mobley received the Miss America crown in 1959 and she was the first Miss Mississippi to win the national competition. After that achievement, she went on to have a successful career in show business.

She landed a number of stage roles and later appeared in the 1965 Elvis Presley film called ‘Girl Happy’. Her work in that movie earned Mobley a ‘Golden Globe as New Star of the Year.’

She was also cast in a few TV programs including “Diff'rent Strokes”, “Love, American Style” and “Fantasy Island”. Mobley was the first woman who was voted into the University of Mississippi Hall of Fame and a little more than a decade ago she made it into the Mississippi Musicians Hall of Fame.

Mobley was well known for her charity work, which led to her being given an Outstanding Woman of the Year award in the mid 1960s. She and her husband, Gary Collins had traveled internationally together in an effort to put a stop to world hunger.

In light of her passing, the chairman of the board and CEO of the Miss America Organization, Sam Haskell commented “She challenged me, she loved me, and she made me laugh. I shall miss her.”
