Dr. King biopic hits the big screen

STORY: English actor David Oyelowo, Oprah Winfrey and Civil Rights activists reflect on the contemporary significance of the civil rights movement at a special screening of the Martin Luther King Jr. biopic, "Selma," on Saturday (December 6) night in Goleta, California.

"Selma" follows civil rights leader Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. over a period of three months in 1965 as he leads a march from Selma to Montgomery, Alabama to the secure equal voting rights for African-Americans in the United States. The march in Alabama is credited with the passing of the Voting Rights Act of 1965.

Civil Rights activists and leaders were invited to a special screening of the film ahead of it's Christmas day release.

The film also stars Tessa Thompson, Lorraine Toussaint, Common and Oprah Winfrey; Winfrey is also one of the films' producers.

Winfrey said the issues hightlighted in "Selma" are reflective of today.
