You might expect to see a manatee in Florida, but probably not in Texas. Recently, however, one was discovered there. The manatee in the waters of Trinity Bay in Chambers County was left stranded.

Manatees are rarely spotted in places like Texas. Recently, however, one was discovered there. The manatee in the waters of Trinity Bay in Chambers County was stranded.

Staffers at Sea World San Antonio were alerted of the creature’s plight and they soon sent a crew to Houston, as did a number of other agencies including the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service.

Dozens of rescuers arrived on scene to help get the manatee out of the cold water. It took about 2 hours for crews to successfully lure him into a net so he could be pulled to shore.

The job of wrangling the mammal wasn’t an easy feat in the least bit. It took three tries to finally get ahold of the creature. When crews got an up-close look at him, they realized the manatee’s 100-mile journey from his Tampa home had been a rough one.

The manatee was malnourished and cold-stressed. A member of the rescue team with Sea World San Antonio remarked “This cold snap that came through just put him over the edge. He didn't have the energy and resources to handle this cold weather.”

Fortunately, he was saved in the nick of time. Following the difficult rescue efforts, the manatee was transported to SeaWorld San Antonio for veterinary care.
