Libya's pro-government forces clash heavily with Shura council forces

The self-declared Libyan army is fighting to take control of Benghazi.

They're up against Shura Council forces, who are among dozens of armed groups fighting to carve out their own fiefdoms, three years after the overthrow of Muammar Gaddafi.

Spokesman Mohammed Hijazi says the army is poised for victory.

"These terrorist groups are now surrounded in the fish market and the port areas and we have now pushed them down between the jaws and pincers."

The fighting continues amid doubts about the central government, just declared unconstitutional by the country's supreme court.

The ongoing uncertainty brings Libya closer to what Western powers and Libya's neighbors fear most: a full-blown civil war.
