One major issue currently top of the mind is the debate regarding the role of the Planning Commission. In some ways, it has been a perennial debate. Every few years there are calls for reforms of the Commission. This time, however, there's an added urgency. The Government-appointed Independent Evaluation Office, headed by Ajay Chibber has recommended the Commission be scrapped and replaced by a Reform and Solutions Commission. It has an ally here. The present Prime Minister, Narendra Modi was a strong critic of the Commission when he was the Chief Minister of Gujarat. So is it curtains for the Commission?
