20-year-old Liz Marks says she was driving along a road in 2012 when she got a text from her mother, and the seconds it took for her to read it forever changed her life.
By the time she fixed her gaze back on the road, it was too late to avoid colliding with a tow truck that was making a left hand turn.
She had to be airlifted to a shock and trauma center, where she was kept in intensive care for over a month.
Marks also underwent numerous surgeries.
The accident left her with pronounced facial scarring, blindness in one eye, and diminished hearing abilities.
It was losing friends, though, that she says was among the hardest things to take.
Some drifted away because her condition was too much for them to handle.
Others went on to college and over time became less and less available.
Marks has since joined the US Department of Transportation’s national safety campaign to impress upon people that looking at their phones while driving just isn’t ‘worth it’.
