A village in central Sri Lanka turned into disaster scene on Wednesday (October 29) when it was hit by three kilometer wide landslide.

Officials say the slide buried more than 140 houses and killed at least ten people. More than 250 others are still missing.

Monsoon rains have drenched the area near Haldumulla, about 192 km (120 miles) east of the capital of Colombo in recent days.

Disaster officials say villagers had been advised to move away from the area because of the landslide threat, but many did not heed the warning.
