Officials with The National Park Service are investigating cases of vandalism after photos surfaced on social media showing graffiti-like paintings in parks.

Thus far 10 national parks have been targeted. Yosemite National Park in California, Rocky Mountain National Park in Colorado and Oregon’s Crater Lake National Park are just a few that have been affected.

Reportedly, the National Park Service is looking into whether or not a New York-based artist is behind the works. The website ModernHiker.com picked up on the story and photos after being notified by Calipidder, a California exploration website, who uncovered the pictures on the Instagram page of user @creepytings.

The account appears to be controlled by a woman who documented her so-called artworks on social media. The female is said to have traveled across the west and utilized acrylic paint to leave her paintings on park rocks.

The story gained further momentum after Casey Schreiner of ModernHiker grabbed additional images from the suspect’s account, leading to the National Park Service launching an investigation to find out who is behind the suspected vandalism.

National Park Service spokesman Jeffrey Olson remarked “It interrupts the visitor experience, it damages the landscapes. These landscapes are natural, cultural and historic. They’ve been set aside for us to preserve and protect, for people to enjoy today and in the generations to come.”

It is considered a federal misdemeanor to vandalize national parks.
